Acclaimed jazz vocalist Spider Saloff teams with guitarist Steve Ramsdell to create a fresh collection of classic jazz and original songs on LIKE GLASS

/UCWE/ - Acclaimed jazz vocalist Spider Saloff teams with guitarist Steve Ramsdell to create a fresh collection of classic jazz and original songs on LIKE GLASS. Special guests include legendary jazz bassist Kelly Sill; renowned Brazilian percussionist Geraldo de Oliveira, and rising star Zach Brock on jazz violin.

This new release pays homage to the “mood albums” created in 1960s by artists such as Frank Sinatra, where the listener is musically placed within a “hip” but laid-back ambient setting. Yet LIKE GLASS is no sonic wallpaper; rather, there is a distinctive Latin groove within these jazz tracks that sets it apart from other mood music. Its innovative arrangements and unusual instrumentation (vocals, guitar, bass, jazz violin and Latin percussion) titillate the ear while wrapping listeners in a cocoon of cool.

LIKE GLASS creates a fresh sound that not only will be highly popular in jazz markets, but will make an easy cross-over to smooth jazz and AAA/pop markets (as the music will appeal to fans of Diana Krall, Norah Jones or Michael Buble). Saloff’s agile voice, elegant style and powerhouse delivery displays a remarkable range and showcases a wide repertoire; one minute she’s taking on a lovely Billy Holiday-like quality, then scatting impressively the next. What a great set of pipes!

LIKE GLASS by Spider Saloff is nationally distributed to chain and indie stores by Big Daddy Distribution, Alliance/AEC, Super-D and other sources; it is also available online and through digital download.

Spider Saloff

Heard worldwide as the co-star and co-creator of the internationally syndicated Public Radio series Words and Music, jazz vocalist-composer Spider Saloff is a five-time winner of the prestigious MAC Award (including Best Female Jazz Vocalist) presented by the Manhattan Association of Cabarets; she has also received a special citation for her musical contributions from NARAS (presenter of the Grammy Awards). Saloff has recorded and performed with such jazz luminaries as Tom Harrell, Nick Brignola, Ray Drummond, Harry Allen, Mark Murphy and Dick Hyman, and has worked frequently with Larry Novak, Tony Monte, Steve LaSpina, Ken Peplowski and Bill Charlap. She has been called “a thrilling singer” by Lionel Hampton, and “a gifted and polished stylist” by Rex Reed.

A much in-demand live performer, Saloff has played such renowned jazz and night club venues as New York’s Joe’s Pub, Birdland, The Russian Tea Room, Michael’s Pub, Town Hall, Dick Hyman’s Jazz and The Algonquin; San Francisco’s Castro Theatre, Jazz at Pearl’s and the Plush Room; Seattle’s Triple Door; as well as Chicago’s famed Gold Star Sardine Bar, The Green Mill, and the Fairmont Hotel. Other leading venues include symphony orchestra and concert spaces such as The Smithsonian in Washington DC, Wilmington Grand Opera, and the Wallingford Symphony.

Saloff received the honor of performing the American premiere of a newly discovered song by the great Billy Strayhorn, “So This Is Love;” and, as one of the rare officially sanctioned acts of the Gershwin Centennial, her concert Spider Saloff Sings Gershwin toured the U.S. and headlined the St. Petersburg Gershwin Festival in Russia.

She is regularly featured on television and radio, including The Bonnie Hunt Show (CBS), The Steve Baskerville Show (CBS), Centerstage (PBS), Artbeat (PBS), Words & Music (syndicated series, 57 episodes), a one-hour feature on the Noteworthy Women series (Public Radio), and Studs Terkel (WFMT).

To date, Saloff has five CDs released nationally on Kopaesthetics Records: 1938, Sextet, The Memory of All That, A New Set of Standards, and the Christmas album Cool Yule (which was a finalist for the Indie Awards). Her sixth CD is LIKE GLASS.
