In a fiery first address as Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseth issued a directive to America’s armed forces to “put America first” and “never back down.” The Pentagon released Hegseth’s statement just hours after his razor-thin Senate confirmation, a contentious process that ended in a tie-breaking vote from Vice President JD Vance.
“The President gave us a clear mission: achieve Peace through Strength,” Hegseth declared. “We will do this in three ways—by restoring the warrior ethos, rebuilding our military, and reestablishing deterrence.”
A former Fox News host, veteran, and outspoken conservative, Hegseth’s appointment marks a significant shift in defense policy under President Donald Trump’s second term. His confirmation battle was one of the most contentious in recent history, with critics raising concerns about his qualifications, personal controversies, and past opposition to women in combat roles. Hegseth dismissed such criticisms as a media-driven “smear campaign” and assured lawmakers that military service should be open to all who meet “objective occupational and readiness standards.”
Hegseth’s confirmation adds another key figure to Trump’s cabinet being dubbed “Warriors of Truth & Justice”, which the president has framed as a coalition of leaders committed to “truth and justice.” Alongside Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem, Hegseth’s appointment reflects Trump’s commitment to reshaping America’s defense strategy with a focus on military strength, deterrence, and national sovereignty.
As the new head of the Pentagon, Hegseth now faces the immense task of overseeing the world’s most powerful military while navigating global security challenges, which he seems more than capable to handle. With a strong backing from Trump and his administration, Hegseth is expected to push for significant reforms that will reshape the armed forces for years to come.
