Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook, is reportedly working on a cutting-edge artificial intelligence (AI) system with ambitions to match the capabilities of OpenAI’s most advanced models, according to sources familiar with the matter, as reported by the Wall Street Journal on Sunday.

This new AI endeavor from Meta aims to be ready for deployment next year, and initial reports suggest it will be several times more potent than its existing commercial offering, known as Llama 2. Llama 2 is an open-source AI language model introduced by Meta in July and distributed via Microsoft’s cloud Azure services. It was designed to compete with established AI models like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Bard.

While the details of Meta’s forthcoming AI system are still subject to change, its primary objective will be to empower other companies to develop services capable of producing advanced text, data analysis, and other outputs. The development timeline indicates that Meta plans to commence training this new AI model, classified as a large language model, early in 2024.

The emergence of generative AI models, such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT, has sparked immense interest among businesses and enterprises seeking to harness their capabilities for enhanced text generation and more streamlined business processes. The recent development aligns with a broader industry trend, where major players like Apple are also venturing into the AI arena. In July, Bloomberg News reported that Apple was actively working on AI solutions akin to OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Bard, even unveiling its proprietary framework named ‘Ajax’ for creating large language models. Apple engineers have also been testing a chatbot referred to as ‘Apple GPT’.

The race to develop advanced AI systems signifies the growing importance of artificial intelligence in shaping the future of technology and business. As companies like Meta Platforms continue to invest in AI research and development, we can anticipate significant advancements that will further transform how we interact with and utilize AI-powered technologies.
